New York Times graphics
New Orleans graphic
This piece was adapted from a graphic by Haeyoun Park, based on surveys that she made of three neighborhoods in New Orleans. The web version uses maps, photographs, video interviews and data to create a portrait of how the city has rebuilt three years after Hurricane Katrina struck.
Beijing map
This graphic includes a map showing which sections of Beijing's old city have been demolished and which have been designated as historic conservation areas.
Presidential primaries
I made a series of interactive election maps during the 2008 presidential primaries to show state- and county-level returns as they were reported on election night.
Inflation graphic
This graphic shows average American household consumption, based on Consumer Price Index data.
Movie revenues
Here's a look at box office revenues for movies since 1986. This is an interactive version of a chart designed by Lee Byron and Amanda Cox.
Candidate travels
American presidential campaigns focus the bulk of their efforts on a handful of states. This map shows the places where the 2008 presidential candidates have made campaign appearances. An interactive timeline lets the viewer explore change over time.
California wildfires
As wildfires burned out of control in Southern California, I adapted my thematic mapping software to show the affected areas using data from the MODIS satellite.
Subprime mortgages
This graphic illustrates spatial variation in rates of subprime mortgage lending in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. As you zoom in, the resolution switches from county- to census tract-level data.
Timeline of space exploration
Designer Jonathon Corum and I created this gallery of images from the history of space exploration. The images slide apart to reveal descriptions of events and links to articles from the Times's archive.

MapShaper
MapShaper is a free online editor for Shapefiles (a common GIS data format). I developed MapShaper as part of my Master's research at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. To learn more, you can try it, visit the blog or read a paper about it:
